millworker pioneers, millworker for less James Taylor and his team have created a new millworker career path for millworkers, which includes a new role for the older workforce.
“Millworkers are the new breed,” Mr Taylor said.
“They’re all over the place in terms of what they do.
We’ve got the older millworkers.
We’re seeing millworkers now coming into the business as we speak.
They’re also in demand as young workers, they’re in demand for their skills and their knowledge, they are looking for a job that can give them a bit more freedom in their life.”
Millworkers have been a part of the Australian mill industry since the 1920s, but Mr Taylor believes the new role is a change for the better.
“We’ve seen that millworkers are increasingly looking for more flexibility, more freedom and a bit of freedom of choice in their work life,” he said.
Mr Taylor says millworkers need to accept the changes they are coming into and get on with it.
“There are a lot of jobs out there that people think are more demanding but the reality is that millwork is a very flexible, low-risk, low risk job,” he explained.
“In fact, most of the jobs in the mill industry are still very, very demanding.
It’s a very safe, low stress job, and I think we’re seeing a lot more millworkers embracing that.”
Millworker careers are growingThe millworker roles range from the basics like picking the fruit, to the more challenging roles like picking and sorting.
“You’re going to see more and more people in the field now, more people wanting to be in that role, and there’s a lot to be said for that,” Mr Tegan said.
Millworkers need more timeMillworkers often have to do a lot in their spare time.
“It can be quite exhausting, and so we’ve seen a lot change over the years,” Mr Thompson said.
He said millworkers were also beginning to look to the older generation for their roles.
“The younger generation, they’ve got a lot less work to do,” he added.
“I think we’ve just seen them take a bit longer to come into the industry, because they’re more mature in their experience.”
Mr Taylor believes millworkers have come to appreciate the benefits of working in a stable environment.
“A lot of people are just starting out in the business now,” he remarked.
“Some of the younger millworkers just aren’t comfortable with that kind of pressure.
They’ve sort of realised that they can do whatever they want and that they don’t have to take a pay cut just because they don, so they’re embracing the flexibility.”
For millworkers who want to move up to a new position, Mr Tevan said it was important to be flexible.
“To be honest, I think a lot millworkers don’t realise that they’re going through a transition period,” he admitted.
“Once they’re at the top of their game, they realise they can move up and to be honest with you, that’s a really good thing.”
Mill workers need to be more adaptableMillworkers aren’t the only ones who need to learn new skills to stay relevant in the workforce.
The new role will also allow millworkers to learn the skills of a different generation, he said, with millworkers coming to understand that a different approach is required.
“As a millworker, it’s really important to learn from the older generations, because it gives you an understanding of what it means to be an older person,” Mr Tavenan said.”[Millworkers] don’t always realise what it’s like to be the boss of an older worker, and the boss that’s always on call, and that’s just a really valuable lesson to learn.”
Mill worker careers range from cleaning and packaging to preparing and packing, millwork pioneer James Taylor said the future was bright.
“All of us need to get up to speed, but it’s so important that we have that experience at the start,” he noted.
“That’s a key part of being a good person.”
